Reiss receives her BIG Award

Southwest Minnesota State University senior volleyball player Taylor Reiss Monday officially received the Division II Honda Athlete of the Year Award on Monday night at the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda at Galen Center on the campus of the University of Southern California.
Reiss, a native of Taunton, and graduate of Minneota High School, received the award and was interviewed in front of a live national television audience on CBS Sports Network.
During the presentation, Reiss said she started her career as a middle blocker and moved to hitter. She was asked if that was a difficult transition she said, “It was very difficult because I was unfamiliar with it.”
When she started she was in the back row. Reiss joked, “I think I shanked the first five balls to me.” But she added, “It made me a better athlete.”
The CWSA, in its 43rd year, honors the nation's top NCAA women athletes recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
The honor was voted on by national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the CWSA program.
Reiss is graduating from SMSU and intends to work in occupatioinal therapy with kids with disabilities.
