Mudhens sizzling in summer heat

Minneota takes lead alone in Land O'Ducks with 11th straight win

Tyson Sonnenburg hit a two-run home run to back the strong pitching of Danny Hennen as the Minneota Mudhens topped the Dumont Saints 8-4 to take sole possession of first place in the Land O' Ducks League on Sunday.
The win was the 11th straight for the Mudhens (8-0 in league, 11-1 overall). Minneota and Dumont were tied atop the league with 7-0 records entering the fray.
Hennen scattered 11 hits in going the distance for the win. The Saints had a runner on base in every inning, but Hennen was able to escape unscathed in all but the first and ninth innings.
"Danny pitched a gem," said Sonnenburg. "He kept the hitters off balance all game long."
Austin Buysse had a standout game at shortstop for Minneota, including a pair of diving plays.
The Mudhens have been playing solid defense all season. With the Mudhens leading 2-1, AJ Myhre threw out a Dumont runner trying to score the tying run in the seventh inning.
The Mudhens scored twice in the eighth inning for a 4-1 lead and then added four in the ninth, including Sonnenburg's home run to left-center field.
Dumont won two games in the state tournament last season.
"We have a mixture of some veterans and some young guys and it's been fun to put the two together this season and really play some solid ball," Sonnenburg said.
The Mudhens play their next three games at home, Thursday, June 30 against the Hadley Buttermakers (non-league), Thursday, July 7 against the Castlewood Monarchs (non-league), and Saturday, July 9 against the Ortonville Rox (league).
