Mudhens rout Appleton in league opener

The Minneota Mudhens opened Land O' Ducks League play on Sunday against the Appleton A's before a nice crowd at K.P. Kompelien Field.
Although a severe storm ravaged the town three days earlier and knocked down trees in Riverside Park next to the ballpark, the field was in excellent shape for the game.
Danny Hennen worked the first seven innings for the win. The right-hander scattered eight hits while striking out nine. He escaped a bases-loaded jam with one out in the second inning by striking out the next two hitters, He also struck out the side in the sixth inning.
AJ Myhre and Austin DeVlaeminck each pitched a scoreless inning of relief and both recorded one strikeout.
Minneota (2-1) started out quickly, scoring twice in the first inning. Alex Pohlen was hit by a pitch with one out and Austin Buysse followed with a single. A wild pitch moved the runners up a base, and with two outs, Hennen drove a pitch over the left fielder's head for a double, scoring both runners.
The Mudhens then tacked on three more runs in the second inning on two hits, a walk, a hit batsmen and three wild pitches. The big hit was a two-run single by Alex Pohlen.
In the sixth inning, the Mudhens capped the scoring with four runs. AJ Myhre, Ben Skorczewski and Peyton Gillund all drove in a run. The other scored on a wild pitch.
Ben Skorczewski went 3-for-3, including a double, scored twice and drove in a run. Alex Pohlen had two hits and two RBI. Hennen, Myhre and Buysse had two hits apiece.
Minneota hosts the Benson Plowboys on Wednesday, May 18, and also host the Clinton Cards for Military Appreciation Night ay 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.

The Mudhens (1-1) trailed 1-0 when they scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning with only one hit.
The Mudhens loaded the bases when Brock Buysse was hit by a pitch, and Austin DeVlaeminck and Alex Pohlen walked. Buysse scored on a wild pitch before Austin Buysse drove in DeVlaeminck and Pohlen with a single.
Minneota had only three total hits, also getting singles by DeVlaeminck and Tyson Sonnenburg.
AJ Myhre started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, while striking out four. Jacob Hennen pitched two innings of relief for the win, giving up three hits and a run. DeVlaeminck pitched the final three innings for the save. He allowed one hit.
