With an eye on home plate, Beau Buysse rounded third and headed for home in the Minneota Mudhens 11-8 win over the Dawson Drakes Wednesday night.

Mudhens overcome wild start; beat Dawson

Sometimes you just don't have it.

Tommy Fischer, making his first start after pitcher for Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, was obviously struggling. He walked five batters and didn't get an out, including walking three runs across the plate before catcher-assistant manager Beau Buysse wandered to the mound and brought in Danny Hennen.

It was just one of those things ... the control wasn't there.

Dawson had a 4-0 lead before Minneota even went to the plate.

But Hennen came in, pitched nine strong innings, gave up just one hit until the eighth, then gave up four runs in the final two innings and the Minneota Mudhens had an 11-8 win over Dawson.

After spotting Dawson four runs, the Mudhens began to chip away at the Drakes.

They scored two in the first inning with run-scoring singles from Adam Durfee and Austin Buysse. Then scored three more in the second to take a 5-4 lead.

That rally was powered by hits by Beau Buysse and Henry Pesch. the Mudhens added three more runs in the fourth with Tyson Sonnenburg's double the big hit and Minneota was in control 8-4.

Dawson committed an error in each of the first four innings and ended with six errors on the night.

But the difference was the way Minneota got the bats moving to the tune of 14 hits. Beau Buysse, Adam Durfee and Austin Buysse had two each and Pesch chipped in, going 3-5 with a run scored.

Dawson rallied off Hennen for four of their five hits in the final two innings and scored four runs.

But the highlights of the game came in the bottom of the eighth.

First, third base coach Cal Swedzinski went to the plate and struck out — but the ball was missed by the catcher, then the first baseman dropped it and Swedzinski was safe. He got a loud ovation.

But not as loud as the one pinch-hitter Drew Fadness received. While he waits patiently for that ONE at bat in a game,  Fadness warms the bench in the dugout.

He got his chance to pinch hit. He had a nine-pitch at bat, fouling off several pitches, then on a 3-2 count, lined the ball into right field for a base hit.

He made it to first and pinch runner Brock Buysse took over.

The ovation for Fadness was loud and long and put a cap on the win for the Mudhens.

They are now 8-4 on the year going into the Paul Larson Memorial Minneota Mudhens Tournament on Saturday. Minneota will play Tracy in the 10 a.m. game with Searles vs. Ruthton to follow. The third place game about 3:30 p.m. will be followed by the championship about 6:30 p.m.

Awards will be presented, including a Most Valuable Player Award. And the Paul Larson Family will be honored with a special presentation before the opening game.
