Mudhens edge Madison to extend win streak to 7
Jake Hennen and AJ Myhre combined to stymie Madison on seven hits as the Minneota Mudhens edged the Mallards 2-1 to extend their winning streak to seven straight game Friday night in Minneota.
"We had another great crowd on hand," said player/manager Tyson Sonnenburg. "We played errorless defense to back strong pitching performances from Jake and AJ."
Madison scored in the first inning on two hits and a sacrifice fly, but Hennen shut the door after that. The right-hander was making his first career start for the Mudhens in the absence of his older brother, Danny, the ace of the staff. Jake Hennen gave up six hits over seven innings for the win. He walked one and struck out six. Myhre picked up the save with two scoreless innings of relief.
Trailing 1-0, the Mudhens tied the game in the fifth when Brock Buysse led off with a single and scored on Austin Buysse's two-out single.
The Mudhens (4-0 in the Land O' Ducks and 7-1 overall) then scored what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth inning when Myhre led off with a double, Ben Skorczewski singled, and Peyton Gillund drove in Myhre with a single.
Austin Buysse and Skorczewski each went 3-for-4 to pace a 12-hit attack for the Mudhens. Gillund and Brock Buysse had two hits apiece. Alex Pohlen and Myhre had one hit apiece.
Brandon Bornhurst took the loss for the Mallards. He walked none and struck out four.
The Mudhens hosted the Clinton Cards in a makeup game on Wednesday, June 15. The Mascot went to press before the conclusion of the game. Those results will appear in next week's edition. Minneota also plays the Morris Eagles at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 17 in Morris.
