Mudhens to begin final playoff push

Following a long July 4 break, the Minneota Mudhens were to swing back into action Wednesday night with a non-league home game against Marshall. That will catapult the 16-4 Mudhens into the final two games of the Land O’Ducks League regular season.

They play a pair of home games at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wheaton against the Dumont Saints and will travel to Cottonwood for a 2:30 p.m. game on Sunday. That will conclude the regular league season. The Mudhens are assured of making the top six-team cutoffs and won’t have to play games to get into the eight-team league playoffs.

However, at state is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and both of the final two games are key to playoff seeding. Dumont is also undefeated in league play with a 8-0 record — and Cottonwood is always a tough opponent for the Mudhens and will be on their home turf.

The Mudhens have also scheduled a playoff “warm-up” game at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 18 at home against the Castlewood, SD Monarchs. Manager Tyson Sonnenburg has indicated there may be more games as well as the Mudhens try to get ready for the double elimination tournament that leads to the Class C State Playoffs.

Land O’Ducks League Standings are: Minneota Mudhens 9-0; Dumont Saints 8-0; Chokio Coyotes 7-3; and Morris Eagles 6-4 Cottonwood Cardinals 5-4 ; Clinton Cards 5-5; Hancock Orphans 4-5; Rosen Express 3-6; Madison Mallards and Dawson Drakes 3-6; Ortonville Rox 1-8 and Appleton A’s 0-7. The top six teams automatically advance to the Section 9A Tournament with two teams going to state at Delano and Maple Lake.
