Morris loses at state tourney

The Morris Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning behind ace hurler Jacob Torgerson. But Watkins rallied for three runs, then held off the Eagles for a 3-1 win at the Class C State Tournament on Sunday.

Both of Section 9C teams are now eliminated. Morris got just three hits off Watkins hurler Matt Geislinger, who fanned 11 Eagles. Getting the only hits for Morris were Mac Beyer with two singles and Ryan Beyer with a single.

Watkins moves on to play Red Wing Friday at the state. Only two teams in Southwestern Minnesota are still alive in the tournament. Raymond beat Perham 7-0 to advance and will play Farming on Saturday in Delano.

The other team is Fairmont, a 2-1 winner over Lake City. Fairmont will play Waterville on Friday night in Delano.

Luverne lost a tough 1-0 contest to New Market and was eliminated.
