Minneota's Tate Walerius crossed home plate with one of the Vultures' runs in a 12-1 win. Granite Falls catcher Cole Fischer got the ball but it was too late.

Legion smacks hit assault on Granite Falls

The last time Minneota was on the diamond, the Vultures lost to Madison, 7-5, after leading, 5-0.

But there was no effects lingering from that tough loss Monday night when they traveled to Granite Falls and took home a 12-1 victory to close out the regular season.

"They don't let it get to them too much," said Coach Keven Larson, adding, "They know when it's time and they play consistently."

Larson and Assistant Coach J.D. Pesch decided to use a pitching staff of four to get ready for the upcoming playoffs on Thursday at home against Pipestone. "We want them all to throw to get ready," said Larson.

Sam Buysse started, followed by Austin Sorensen, Landon Rolbiecki and Teddy Pesch. All total, the four surrendered just one run, seven hits and had five strikeouts.

This has been somewhat of a "summer of discontent" for the Minneota American Legion Vultures.  They played just seven games, going 4-3, and lost games to bad weather, a mission trip and other circumstances.

"I don't know if it was having a little time off, or what," said Larson after his team came back from a week without baseball and smacked 12 hits and scored 12 runs against a team that beat them the first time around this summer.

"It's summer. But we had practice and everyone showed up. We just haven't been consistent when it comes to having games."

The hitting attack was led by Landon Rolbiecki with a pair of doubles, three hits by Sorensen (plus two runs batted in); two hits from Tate Walerius and a pair of hits by Cole Sanow.

Minneota had a 6-0 lead after two innings — scored three more in the fourth and three in the sixth to put the game away.

"It's good for them (his players) to be on schedule. They want to play, it's just that this summer has been hit or miss."

The Vultures are home for the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Pipestone — then the tournament moves to Luverne for the remainder of double elimination play. Minneota was ranked fourth in the playoffs.
