Lakeview upends Vikings for second time in six days

Nathan Fenske scored 25 points, Ethan Schwankl had 22 and Taiven Isaacson added 19 as Lakeview drubbed Minneota 79-61 just six days after escaping with a narrow victory over the Vikings.
The Lakers (19-3) drained seven 3-pointers, with Isaacson accounting for five of them, while shooting 53 percent from the field overall to Minneota's 31 percent.
Max Rost paced the Vikings with 19 points and seven assists, while Sawyer DeSmet notched 12 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Lucas Rybinski finished with 11 points off the bench and Ryan Dalager added seven points.
Lakeview scored the first basket of the game with only three seconds elapsing when Schwankl scored inside, and the Lakers never trailed the rest of the way.
The Vikings (6-14) trailed by 18 points late in the first half, but whittled the deficit to 45-32 when Dalager was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank all three free throws with 1.4 seconds left.
Lakeview built the lead back to 20 points at 58-38 in the second half but the Vikings fought back and reduced the deficit to 66-53 after an 8-2 run on two free throws each from Rost, Dalager and Anthony Rybinski, the latter who also scored on a layup. Lakeview then went on a 5-0 run to put the game away.

In a game that featured 49 turnovers, unbeaten Russell-Tyler-Ruthton thwarted Minneota's upset bid on Thursday night in Tyler.
The much-improved Vikings fell to RTR 71-39 in their last meeting on Dec. 20 in Minneota.
Minneota is an underclassmen-dominated team with just one senior in the starting lineup, while RTR stars four seniors.
Blake Christianson scored a game-high 18 points, 13 above his season average, off the bench for the Knights (18-0).Blake Gravely added 16 points and Cody Wichmann 10.
It was the second straight close game that the Vikings (6-13) had against a strong opponent after losing to Lakeview 61-58 two night earlier. Those two opponents have a combined 34-3 record.
"We knew this was going to be a tough season and that there were going to be a lot of tough games," said Minneota coach Chad Johnston. "My goal was to continue to improve throughout the season and make them a very competitive team by tournament time. I know there is a higher level of teams in our conference and section, but I think we are proving that we can be competitive with anyone."
The Vikings got 16 points from Max Rost and 14 points and 12 rebounds from Sawyer Desmet.
Minneota grabbed a quick 6-0 lead against the Knights with Rost accounting for all the points on a pair of layups and a 10-foot jumper.
With Minneota leading 14-8, the Knights went on a 16-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. Ryan Dalager then splashed a 3-pointer with one minute remaining in the first half and DeSmet scored inside just before the horn to make it 26-19 at halftime.
Minneota fell behind by as many as 15 points in the second half before staging a valiant rally. The Vikings went on a 10-0 run with Rost scoring eight of those points and Peyton Sheik sinking a pair of free throws to whittle the deficit to 49-44, but the Vikings would get no closer.

Lakeview 61, Minneota 58

Lakeview rallied from a 12-point deficit, outscoring Minneota 31-20 in the second half to avert an upset and pull out the win in Minneota.
Nathan Fenske had a game-high 21 points for the Lakers. Taiven Isaacson added 13 points and Ethan Schwankl had 12.
Peyton Sheik led Minneota (6-12) with 19 points to go along with nine rebounds. Max Rost had 14 points and seven assists, and Sawyer DeSmet had 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Minneota expanded its 38-30 halftime lead to 42-30 when Peyton Sheik drained a 12-footer and Max Rost scored inside after taking a feed from Anthony Rybinski.
Lakeview (16-3) then went on a 14-2 run to tie the game 44-44 lead. Minneota briefly regained the lead 48-46 on Rost's drive down the left side of the lane with 11:03 remaining. Nathan Fenske scored on a drive a few seconds later and the Lakers never trailed after that, although the Vikings were in close range throughout the remainder of the game.
"We need to find some consistency in our play and be able to do it every night," said Minneota coach Chad Johnston. "I felt we played with a lot of intensity. We just made a couple of mistakes at key times that hurt us. Credit Lakeview for making plays when they needed to."
The Lakers built a 55-50 advantage before the Vikings against knotted the game on another Rost drive and a three-pointer from Ryan Dalager with 4:15 to go.
Lincoln Vogel then scored from close range and sank a pair of free throws on consecutive possessions to give Lakeview a 59-55 lead with 3:07 left. Anthony Rybinski splashed a three-points from the right wing with 1:04 remaining to trim the deficit to 59-58.
The Vikings got the ball back on a Lakeview turnover and had a chance to take the lead but Fenske stepped in front a pass for a steal and drove the length of the floor for a dunk and a 61-58 lead with 10 seconds left.
Minneota called a timeout to set up a final play but were unable to get a shot off before the final horn.
