AJ Josephson

Josephson qualifies for state track

Will compete in 200, 400 Thursday; girls send 3 individuals, relay team

AJ Josephson is the only member of the Canby/Minneota boys or girls track team from Minneota that is heading to the State Track and Field Meet on Friday, June 18 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
He was also the lone member of the Canby/Minneota boys' team to qualify. The C/M girls that qualified for state are all from Canby.
Josephson qualified in both the 200 and 400 dashes, finishing first in both events at the Section 3A meet Thursday in Redwood Falls. His time in the 200 was 23.12 and he finished the 400 in 49.87.
"I felt pretty confident going in that I had a chance to win," he said.
Josephson got a slow start out of the blocks in the 200 dash and was mired in third place with 80 meters remaining.
"I passed the two ahead of me with only five meters left," Josephson said.
He led the 400 dash from start to finish and nearly matched his career best time of 49.8.
Josephson also was the lead runner in the C/M 4 x 800 relay team that finished third, just missing qualifying for state. The top two in each event advance to state.
"I was really hoping our relay team would go, too," said Josephson, who was an alternate on the 4 x 200 relay team that went to state in 2019.
Josephson the members of the girls' team will travel to St. Michael-Albertville High School on Thursday to practice before competing on Friday.
"I'd really like to thank my coaches and my family," he noted.
Grace Drietz also qualified for state in two individual events, as well as anchoring a state-qualifying relay team. She placed first in the girls' 800 run in a time of 2:16.49, and also the 1600 run in a -place time of 5:01.96.
The Canby/Minneota girls' 4 x 400 relay team of RyAnn Hansen, Claire Stoks, Braelyn Merritt and Drietz placed second and qualified in a time of 4:10.17.
Aidyn Bruns qualified for state in the girls' high jump with a 5-2 leap.
Several CM track members narrowly missed qualifying for state. Besides Josephson, the 4 x 800 boys relay team also consisted of Blake Stoks, Zach Ourada and Kolton Duis and finished in a time of 8:32.85, just five seconds off the second-place team.
The girls' 4 x 200 relay team of RyAnn Hansen, Karlie Wollum, Natalie Stoks and Braelyn Merritt placed third in a time of 1:50.09, just a little over one second from qualifying.
Claire Stoks finished third behind Drietz in the 1600 run.
The boys Class A state meet begins at 10 a.m., while the girls begin at 3:30 p.m.
