Gruenes to wrestle for Augustana

Jonah Gruenes, one of Minneota's top all-time wrestlers, has committed to wrestle for Augustana University next year.
Gruenes not only excelled on the mat in his five years on the varsity at Minneota, but he also excelled in the classroom as evidenced by being named to the Academic All-State team the past two seasons.
"Coach Reitmeier began recruiting me about a year ago to come and be a part of the wrestling team at Augie," said Gruenes. "I went on multiple visits to the campus and spent time with the team and staff."
Gruenes took his time before choosing a school as he wanted to make sure it was the right fit for him.
"I ended up committing to Augie late in the school year because I wanted to make sure I had weighed every option properly and this is really the best place for me to be," he said. "I decided on Augie over other schools because I felt like they offer the best combination of a strong wrestling program and high-level academics. Their wrestling team consistently produces great wrestlers that compete well at the national level.”
Augustana coaches had a strong recruiting year which should keep the program strong for years to come.
"I saw they are bringing in an elite freshman class this year and I knew it is something I wanted to be a part of," Gruenes said. "I also appreciate the school being close to home."

Gruenes, a two-time captain, had 154 career wins and is in the top 10 all-time at Minneota in total wins, wins in a season, near-falls, reversals, technical falls and team points. He was a three-time state entrant.
Gruenes plans to major in Data Science at Augustana.
