Goodhue steals game from Minneota

Goodhue stole Minneota's unbeaten record away on Saturday, topping the previously-unbeaten Vikings 64-44 at the Kasson-Mantorville Tournament.

Goodhue (14-3) had 24 steals in the game, led by Tori Miller with nine. Five other Goodhue players had at least two steals. "It was a tough day for us," said Minneota Coach Chad Johnston.

"I did not do a very good job of preparing the girls for that game."

The Vikings held Morgan Hennen out of the game with an ankle injury sustained in the first half of Thursday's game against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Minneota (13-1), which generally wins the turnover battle, turned the ball over 32 times, 15 more than Goodhue. "That messed up our rotation a little without a lot of time to adjust to people being put into new spots," said Johnston. "It is also very difficult for us to simulate that style of pressure defense that Goodhue runs with our younger players.

They are very aggressive and disciplined in what they do." Natalee Rolbiecki led Minneota with 14 points. Abby Hennen added 11 points. Jeren Rost had six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

McKenzie Tolk also had six points. Minneota kept the game close in the first half, trailing 32-24 at halftime.

But Goodhue opened the second half on a 19-2 run that blew the game open. "They are able to go deep into their bench and constantly sub and keep their players fresh," said Johnston. "We struggled throughout the game, but fatigue became a big problem in the second half as a lot of girls were exhausted."

Three players notched double figures in scoring for Goodhue; Arianna Thomforde had 16 points, Joslyn Carlson 15 and Anika Schafer 12. "It is the type of game that we need to play to expose our weaknesses," Johnston said. "And it was good to put our players in that pressure situation. It was frustrating that we played poorly but it is a great game to learn from."
