Fier champion, Scholten 2nd at Hutch Invite

Minneota's Zack Fier was the individual champion at 152 pounds and Hudson Scholten was second at 285 pounds in the 10-team Hutchinson Invitational on Saturday.
The Vikings did not field a complete team for the invitational as they competed with three open weights due to match counts and injuries. Minneota finished with 124 points and finished seventh among the 10 teams. Watertown-Mayer won the meet with 195.5 points, while Becker was second with 194 points and Willmar third with 157.5.
Placing third for the Vikings was Adam DeVlaeminck at 113 pounds, Peyton Gillund at 126, and Brock Fier at 138. Kaden Lasnetski was fourth at 106, and Eli Gruenes fifth at 182.
Zack Fier (20-1) won his first match in a fall in 35 seconds, then disposed of his semifinal opponent 8-1 in the semifinals before beating Luke Hoag (24-5) of Hutchinson 9-1 in the championship.
Scholten (10-2) won a pair of third-period pins in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, then lost a decision to Jason Fenske of Watertown-Mayer in the championship.
Brock Fier avenged his lone loss in the tournament in his third-place match. After falling to Jack Entinger of Watertown-Mayer 9-6 in his opening match, Fier came back to face him again for third place and won a 13-3 major decision.
DeVlaeminck went 3-1 with two pins and a 6-5 decision over Brendan Burke (31-9) of Amery, WI in the third-place match.
Gillund's three wins at 126 pounds all came via first-period pins, including a pin in 1:29 over Max Martin of Hutchinson in the third-place match. Gillund now has 99 career wins.
In the JV portion of the tournament, Blake Mead of Minneota placed first at 138 pounds, Owen Myrvik was second at 100 pounds, Hunter Danielson third at 88 pounds, Chase Johnson fourth at 138, and Landon Pohlen fifth at 113.

Paynesville Triangular

In a pair of close matches at the Paynesville Triangular on Thursday, Minneota edged Paynesville 31-30 and fell to New London-Spicer 33-30.
Against Paynesville, the Vikings led 9-0 after a decision from Kaden Lasnetski at 106 pounds and a pin from Adam DeVlaeminck at 113.
Minneota is ranked No. 6 in Class A, while Paynesville is No. 13.
Paynesville got a pin at 120 before Minneota's Mason Javers earned a close decision at 126 and Peyton Gillund followed with a pin for an 18-6 advantage.
Brock Fier's major decision at 145 boosted the Vikings' lead to 22-12 and a technical fall by Zack Fier at 160 made it 27-15. A major decision by Eli Gruenes at 195 pushed the Vikings' lead to 31-24.
Paynesville needed at least one major decision over the final two weights to gain avoid the loss but was unable to get it.
In the NLS match, the Vikings got pins from Brock Fier at 138 pounds and Gruenes at 195, plus a technical fall from Zack Fier at 152, a major from DeVlaeminck at 113, and decisions from Lasnetski at 106, Gillund at 126, and Alex DePestel at 170.
The Wildcats trailed 30-24 heading into the final two weights and got a pin from Garret Leenstra at 220 to tie the match, and then a decision by Marshel Johnson at 285 for the win.
