Jared Josephson (left) and Jacob Hennen of Minneota tried to stop Montevideo's Henry Strunc. They, along with Logan Sussner (center), had him surrounded.

Fast start propels win over Monte

It certainly looked like Minneota was going to run the Montevideo Thunderhawks off the floor.
But it didn’t continued that way despite a torrid start, and ended with a 79-67 Viking victory.
With Thomas Hennen, Jacob Hennen and Nolan Boerboom all firing on all cylinders from long range, they ran up a 22-4 lead. (Minneota sank six, three-pointers in the first nine minutes).
At one point Montevideo Coach Derek Webb threw his hands into the air after a Thomas Hennen three-pointer and said, “Everything he throws up there goes in.”
But Montevideo came roaring back, got within 34-24 and only trailed by 13 after Boerboom hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half.
In fact, Montevideo outscored Minneota 11 to 3 during a seven-minute stretch in which the Vikings were shut out.
Boerboom’s buzzer-beater ended the long streak without a score.
“We came out strong early. We have a lot of guys who can score,” Minneota Coach Dave Busselman said.
But, “Montevideo’s a physical team and we struggled on the inside.”
Fact is, they were out-rebounded, 37-26. Part of that may have been the fact they were playing without Issac Hennen, a senior, inside-force. He was home ill.
“Without him we had a different flow. He’s a senior and he’s stable underneath,” said Coach Busselman.
He added, “And Montevideo is a physical team.” But they went seven minutes without a score, got just seven points the final nine minutes and watched Montevideo hit the boards and began to catch up.
By the half it was 37-24 Vilkings after Nolan Boerboom hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer.
Minneota brought more pressure in the second half.
But the other fact was, “Not getting proper position,” under the basket.
Montevideo played inspired basketball, led by Jackson Snell and Isaac Hoogeveen. They caught fire and between them poured in 27 points in the second half.
It actually turned into a three-point shooting battle, with Minneota cashing in on 13 and Montevideo 10.
Thomas Hennen led the way with six of those with brother Jacob Hennen getting  three more and Nolan Boerboom two.
In the second half, Minneota built a 50-31 lead — but again saw the ThunderHawks come roaring back.
Monte got within six at 55-49 before the Vikings used a three-point shot and two, two-pointers by Thomas Hennen to stretch the lead to 60-49.
Logan Sussner added a couple of buckets and the Vikings were able to stretchthe lead to 69-53 when Jared Josephson sank his only three-pointer of the game.
“It was nice to shoot well (44 percent) but we went away from our flow too much,” Coach Busselman explained.
Thomas Hennen ended with 28 points; Jacob Hennen scored 20 and Sussner had 12 to lead the Vikings.
Snell scored 25 for the Montevideo and Hoogeveen added 16.
