Cole VanOverbeke wrestled his way to seventh place at the Rumble on the Red.

Esping third; VanOverbeke seventh at Rumble

Minneota's defending state champion heavyweight TJ Esping took third at the Rumble on the Red wrestling tournament at the Fargodome on Friday.

He woin a 3-2 ultimate tie breaker over Calvin Menke of Scott West to take third place honors.

On Thrusday Esping had three pins and a 3-0 decision to advance.

He got his third pin in 31 seconds over DJ Schneibel of Rugby, ND — then beat Dillon McEachran of Faribault, 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

— but Friday he lost his first match when he was pinned by Zachary Jakes of Mankato West in 3:54. However, he came back in his next match to pin Bryce Benhart of Lakeville North in 31 seconds in the consolation semifinals, then took third place over Menke.

At 152 pounds, Cole VanOverbeke took seventh place when he pinned Kotbe Booka of Moorhead in 34 seconds in the seventh place match.

On opening day VanOverbeke won two matches on a pin and 6-5 decision, then losing to Jaden Mairs of Fargo Davies on a pin. He came back to pin Camden Tshudi of Delano in 2:32 in the consolations.

But on Friday he really got going. VanOverbeke got a pin in 2:05 and beat Kolton Silva of Grand Island, 2-1 to keep his day going.

He finally lost to Cade Spilde of Stoughton, 3-2. But he got to wrestle for seventh and took home that honor.

At 120 pounds, Brant Buysse picked up a pair of wins on a 7-5 decision and a pin but got pinned by Devin Schulz of Bismarck Century. He came back in the consolation round with a pin in 44 secondsover Caleb Talamantes of Albert Lea Area.

His first match Friday was a 6-0 win over Ethan Bowman of Jamestown, ND, 6-0. But then he was eleminated by Taylor DeFrang of Dover-Eyota, 9-3. Buysse ended the tournament with a 4-2 record.

Shawn Buysse, wrestling at 182 pounds, won his first match with a major decision, then was pinned but came back to pin Braxton Garceau of St. Cloud Tech in 1:35 of the consolations.

He was beaten on Friday by Logan Erlandson of Valley City, NE, 10-4.

Teddy Pesch at 126 pounds and Blake Reiss at 138 and Austin Kloos each won their second of three matches on the day.

The Rumble on the Red ends on Friday. After the first day Minneota was in 28th place out of 84 teams with a total of 40 points.
