Disaster hits Vultures, fall to Madison

Austin Sorensen had it all going Tuesday night.
He smashed two long doubles to knocked in three runs and was pitching a strong five-strikeout two hitter over Madison after four innings.
The Vultures led 5-0 and all seemed to be well.
But just around the bend, the Madison American Legion was planning a sabotage that would distort all the fine work Sorensen had done earlier.
Sorensen began to run out of gas so Coach Keven Larson went to Tate Walerius. Sorensen had been the victim of his own walk, a bunt by Mason Court that just got by the pitcher and two more walks that produced two runs.
It was 5-2 when Walerius took over. He got in trouble with a pair of walks — but got out of it when Court slapped into a double play started by Walerius and ending with Josh Laleman at third.
But then came a disaster that cost the Vultures the game. A leadoff double by Trinity Lindner a walk and a bad throw by Walerius loaded the bases and ended his time on the mound.
In came Teddy Pesch. He fanned two and looked to be getting out of the jam when suddenly, as Batman would say, “POW, WHAM” … Pesch plunked Wittnebel and Mortensen and two run scores — then Evan Benson smashed a long drive to the right-centerfield fence to clear the bases and give Madison a 7-5 lead.
Minneota couldn’t recover. Madison pitcher Wyatt Halverson, who was easy picking in the first three innings became Superman, fanned 11 and pitched until he reached the pitch count at 105 pitches with one out in the seventh.
Youngster Griffin Johnson came on, retired the Vultures and preserved a 7-5 Madison win.
