Depleted Mudhens falls twice in SD tourney
The Minneota Mudhens traveled to Brookings for a weekend tournament and lost one pitcher to an already depleted staff, while losing two games.
The tournament was played in seven-inning games and the Mudhens fell in nine innings to the Aberdeen Circus 10-5. The Mudhens then were blanked 5-0 by the Golden Sombreros, an independent team comprised of players from Minnesota and South Dakota.
In the game against the Golden Sombreros, Preston Nuy started the game on the mound but left after throwing only one pitch due to a strained bicep. Jake Leighton, Austin Buysse and Grady Moorse finished up.
Danny Hennen pitched six strong innings again Aberdeen and left with the game tied 5-5. Each team scored runs in the eighth inning before the Circus exploded for five runs in the ninth inning. The tournament followed Major League Baseball rules in which a runner starts from second base in an extra inning.
Aberdeen went on to win the tournament, beating South Dakota state champion Harrisburg Hops in the championship.
