C/M boys, girls wins section tune-up

Drietz; Stoks finish first; 3A section meet Thursday in Luverne

In the final regular season cross country meet of the season, the Canby/Minneota swarmed to the finish line like flies to a watermelon last Thursday in Granite Falls.
"What a great, great meet," Canby/Minneota coach Allyson Pesek expressed. "I love to see the 'sea' of black. We have certainly had a wonderful season."
The Canby/Minneota girls had a near-perfect score, finishing with seven runners in the top 10. C/M had 17 points to take home first place, well ahead of runner-up Border West with 60 points.
Grace Drietz continued her streak of finishing first in every meet this season, this one in a time of 19:23. Claire Stoks was second in 20:20, Braelyn Merritt fourth in 20:38, McKenzie Ruether fourth in 21:26, and Natalie Stoks seventh in 24:10.
In the boys race, Canby/Minneota topped Border West 20-41 with Blake Stoks taking first in a time of 18:00, while teammate Kolton Duis was second in 18:04. The Canby/Minneota boys also had seven of the top 10 runners.
Of the other three counted finishes for C/M, Ethan Ourada was fifth in 18:49, Tristan Bierschenk seventh in 19:23 and Blake Giese eighth in 19:33.
Pesek was pleased to see her team's improvements throughout the season as much as the wins.
"My favorite part was comparing our times from the YME meet on Sept. 10 to this meet; almost an entire month late," she said. "For the unique season, it was a great way to see our improvements from beginning to end. Our runners averaged about one minute improvement on their times. That shows our hard work this season had truly paid off."
The teams will next compete in the Section 3A meet today (Oct. 15) in Luverne. The boys will run at 1:45 p.m. and the girls follow at 2:10 p.m.
"This has been a season like no other," said Pesek. "But there were many silver linings that made this season one of the best. I am so excited looking at our future."
