Chokio, Dumont earn trip to state

Chokio as the No. 1 seed and Dumont No. 2 are the two teams representing the Land O’Ducks League in the state tournament.

Chokio won the tournament with a 5-3 victory over Dumont and will get a bye in the first round. The Hancock Orphans earlier knocked Clinton out of the tournament, 3-0; then lost to Dumont, 4-2 and finished third. Dumont will play New Market at noon, Saturday, Aug. 20 at Hamburg.

The tournament will be held in Green Isle, Hamburg and Norwood.

As the champion, Chokio will have the first week off and will play at noon Sunday, Aug. 27 at Norwood against either Kimball or New Prague. Chokio drafted pitchers Colton Vien of Montevideo; Brandon Bornhorst of Madison and Jacob Torgerson of Morris.

Dumont drafted Spencer Kidder of Hanock, Elden Evans of Montevideo and Chris Fellows of Ortonville. The Chokio Coyotes claimed the Region 9C championship with a 5-3 win over the Dumont Saints on Sunday, Aug. 13 in Madison.

Chokio led 1-0 after three innings, but Dumont didn’t go down quietly, tying and gaining the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Coyotes tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame, but Dumont again gained the lead with a run in the fifth.

Chokio responded with two runs in the bottom half to go up 4-3, this time the lead was for good. Chokio added an insurance run in the sixth and held Dumont off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Nick Hervin took the win on the mound for Chokio. Chandler Erickson earned the save, giving up one hit in the final two innings.

Dumont started the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Minneota Mudhens.

Other area teams in the state include: State Champ Raymond opens against Mora; Springfield playing Sobieski; the Hadley Buttermakers going against Cannon Falls and the Milroy Irish playing Henderson the first weekend. On the second weekend, Lamberton will play the winner of the Green Isle vs. Regal game.

And Fairmont will play Crookston or Buffalo during the second weekend.

Fairmont is a former section foe of the Minneota Mudhens when Minneota was in the Gopher League and had playoffs with the First Nite League teams.
