Buysse named Vikings’ wrestling co-head coach

Matt Buysse, who has been an assistant wrestling coach at Minneota since the 2015-16 season, has been promoted to co-head coach with Matt Myrvik, who begins his fourth season as head coach.
"I am truly excited about the opportunity and trust Matt is giving me," said Buysse, a 2007 Minneota graduate. "I'm excited to help the kids and make an impact on them not only as athletes, but as people."
Buysse was a three-time state wrestling qualifier while at Minneota, compiling 134 wins. He also wrestled one season at the University of Jamestown (ND), where he also played football for five seasons.
Buysse and his wife, Kaley, then moved to Colorado Spring where Matt became an assistant football coach from 2012-14 for Class 5A assistant football coach at Vista Ridge High School and assistant wrestling coach at Class 4A Liberty High School.
The Buysses then moved to Minneota and Matt became an assistant football coach here from 2014 to the present and was an assistant wrestling coach under Jesse Nelson at Southwest Minnesota State University for the 2014-15 season before being named an assistant wrestling coach here in 2015 until the present.
The Buysses live in Ghent and have three children, Ryker, 5; Maddox, 4; and Kaysen, 8 months.
"Matt Buysse has always shown that he has a strong desire to coach, work with, and mentor young high school athletes," said Myrvik. "Through my years in coaching, I have learned that coaches will usually go above and beyond when given the opportunity to prove themselves, and given more responsibility."
Buysse has been the Agriculture/Industrial Tech teacher here since 2017. He is also the FFA Advisor here.
The co-head coaching idea was on the table when Myrvik was first hired. Myrvik currently works for Borch's Sporting Goods in Marshall besides being the offensive coordinator for the football team.
"We feel this can help the program move forward," said Buysse. "We're really not going to change anything. It will basically be the same thing we've been doing in the past. I'm just thankful I was given the opportunity to make a goal I had of being a head coach where I can give back to a sport that gave so much to me."
Myrvik also feels that having Buysse working in the school building allows for growing and building relationships with wrestlers during the school day.
"I have no doubt that Matt will take this opportunity and flourish," Myrvik said. "I look forward to working side by side with Matt and our other coaches to continue to provide a great program that will demand hard work, effort and an opportunity to succeed from youth to high school."
The assistant wrestling coaches Will be Kris Fier, Wade Gillund, Drew Bouwman, Brock Buysse, and Chad Janiszeski.
