Ruth Swedzinski Jacob
On Sunday, April 19, 2020, Ruth Swedzinski Jacob, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in her Simi Vallley, CA home at the age of 93.
Ruth was born in Canby, MN and was the middle child of Frank and Winifred (Boulton) Swedzinski.
She was raised on a farm in Taunton, MN where she graduated from Minneota High School in 1945 and got a B.S. in History and double minors in English and Psychology from St. Cloud State College.
Following her undergrad studies, Ruth met her future husband Robert (Bob) while teaching at Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville, MN. They married on July 3, 1956 and soon after moved to Pamona, CA in response to the increasing demand for educators in California. Ruth then got her teaching credential and master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from California State University Los Angeles in 1961.
After a few years, the Jacob family moved to Simi Valley, CA when Bob became principal of Simi Valley High School. Ruth was the counselor at Sequoia Junior High School and served on numerous Simi Valley Unified School District task forces and committees through the years. Even after retiring in June 1991, Ruth stayed active with SVUSD helping with events such as middle school mock elections and more.
Ruth’s love of her community showed through a lifetime of volunteer service quietly affecting positive societal change, striving for equality for women and enhancing the education of women and young girls.
In 2016, she was awarded the Simi Valley Educator Foundation Lew Roth Lifetime Achievement Award. Because of her dedication to volunteering, Ruth was very well known through out the area.
She was a fixture at countless community events, organizations and celebrations. It was not uncommon to hear “Hi Ruth!” or “Hi Mrs. Jacob!” as she went about her daily activities which could sure extend the time it took for a simple trip to the grocery store!
Ruth volunteered with over 20 local community organizations. Humble about her service, Ruth didn’t seek attention or recognition but throughout the years, it seemed to find her regardless.
In 1967, Ruth became a Charter Member of the American Association of University Women and was also an Honorary Lifetime Member of Simi Valley Kiwanis Club(and Board of Directors for almost 20 years), and and many other community service organizations.
In addition to all these activities, Ruth was a devote wife of 28 years before her husband Bob’s passing in 1983 and is survived by her daughter Jill Wosnak from Simi Valley, CA, sons Todd Jacob and partner Madeline Vega from Lancaster, CA and Mike Jacob and wife Michelle from Carnation, WA, and her three grandchildren Makaila Wosnak, and Avery and Nolan Jacob.
She is also survived by her brother Tom Swedzinski and wife Madeline in Taunton, MN as well as many nieces and nephews.
