John Joseph VanOverbeke was born on September 29, 1964, in Marshall, to Duane and Diane (De Crock) VanOverbeke. He attended Lynd and Marshall Schools, graduating from Marshall High School in 1983.

John also attended SMSU in Marshall, specializing in culinary services and was an outstanding cook.

John enlisted into the U.S. Army after graduation and obtained the rank of Sergeant while serving in Germany. He left the Army with an honorable discharge in 1986.

On September 15, 1984, he was united in marriage to Melissa Werpy and to this union was born son Jordyn.

John worked at McLaughlin and Schulz, Koch Oil (Flint Hills) and Midwest Contracting. John suffered a work related injury at Midwest on May 18, 1999, that left him handicapped.

Despite his handicap, he was able to enjoy most aspects of life and never complained. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing with his boys, family and fishing buddy Tommy Barber.

John is survived by his sons Jordyn, Landyn and Avery (and their mother, Caryn Hetland); his biological daughter Macey and grandson Ayden; siblings Wendy VanOverbeke of Hopkins, MN, Randy (and Susan) VanOverbeke of Russell and Melinda (and Ron) Lyng of Placerville, CA; nieces and nephews Erica, Danica, Jessica, Taryn, Boone, Jada and parents Duane and Diane VanOverbeke of Marshall.
