Don died on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.
Don was born April 18, 1936, in Chandler, MN, to Frank August Ferdinand Sanow and Fanna Christina Gesia (Aljet) Sanow.
Don grew up with 13 siblings (seven brothers and six sisters). Frank and Fanna moved their family from Chandler to Garvin, MN, when Don was five years old.
Don attended school in District 52, between Garvin and Balaton until 8th grade. He then worked on the family farm. Don left home at 15 years old and worked full time at the fur (mink) farm and part time at the family farm.
Don met Janyce Marie Blanchard when he was 17 years old. They were married Feb. 2, 1957, three years after they first met.
They made their first home in Lynd, MN, and later moved to a farm between Ghent and Marshall. Ultimately, they moved to Minneota with their three children (one boy and two girls). Their fourth child (boy) was born in 1966. While living in Minneota Don ran the Minneota fur farm and worked in carpentry. Eventually he started his own carpentry and handyman business until his retirement. Don also served in the Army National Guard for 9 1/2 years. He cooked for the troops in his younger years and for many of us most of his life.
Don adored his family. He enjoyed taking them camping, fishing and going for long rides in the country, while singing songs along the drive. He enjoyed making homemade ice cream and decorating for the holidays. He loved traveling, seeing and experiencing new things with Janyce. They also traveled with their eldest son Duane and his family, and occasionally with his daughter Brenda and her family. In later years his travels were curtailed to adventures closer to home, but he still loved it all.
After retirement Don’s hobbies were crafts and woodworking. He really enjoyed all his creative projects.
Don will always be remembered for his generosity in all things. He gave freely to family and friends in any way he could.
Don is survived by his wife Janyce Marie Sanow; daughters Cynthia (Carrie) Dorrance, Brenda VanNoStrand; daughter-in-law Jan Sanow; brother Vernon Sanow; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons Duane Richard Sanow, Ray Erwin Sanow; grandsons Joshua and Jacob; parents Frank and Fanna Sanow; eight brothers and six sisters.
