Swedzinski hails final permitting for copper-nickel mining project

State Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, issued the following statement Friday in response to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issuing PolyMet the final permit necessary for the proposed NorthMet copper-nickel mining project to begin in Hoyt Lakes.

Swedzinski formerly chaired the House’s subcommittee on mining and currently is the minority lead on the Energy and Climate Finance Policy Division.

“This is an exciting opportunity to grow jobs and boost the economy as we bring a new era of mining technology to our state, allowing us to harvest precious metals while also protecting the environment,” Swedzinski said.

“This project has been subject to diligent examination and cautious consideration during the planning stages and it is good to see that, in the end, the right decision has been made. I look forward to seeing the wide range of benefits this project will bring our state.”
