School board compelled to change graduation date

The scenario before the school board was not a good one. “We can’t have a situation where a student has to choose between being at graduation or playing baseball or softball in the sectional tournaments,” said Superintendent Dan Deitte.

He’d recently been told by baseball Coach Keven Larson about the conflicts.

“Hopefully we’ll be playing that day,” the superintendent said.

As a result, the Minneota School Board felt compelled to change the 2019 graduation date to Memorial Day weekend at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26 from Sunday, June 1, 2019.

Minneota had moved its graduation back from the earlier mid-May dates because the school district will move to the later start next year. The district had been starting earlier than many area schools.

The 2018 graduation date will still be Saturday, May 19, 2018. Now all is well. Seniors can have baseball (or softball) and their graduation too!

Teachers of the Year

Minneota has two Teachers of the Year and both will compete in further competitions.

Accepting the challenge to move on in Teacher of the Year competition are Karen Dalager in the Elementary School and Nicolle Johnston in the seven-through 12 school.

“Both are very good teachers,” said School Board Chairman Dawn Van Keulen.

IN OTHER action the board:

•Noted the current enrollment is at 530 — about the same as the start of the year. “Our enrollment continues to stay very stable in our school district,” said Superintendent Dan Deitte.

•Approved a bid from Frank’s Electric, Plumbing and Heating, Inc. for $24,939 to install exterior lighting on Monroe Street and parking lot.

•Approved a bid from Advanced Health, Safety and Security for locker room asbestos removal at a cost of $3,880. The asbestos will be removed over the Christmas holidays in preparation for the upcoming locker room renovation project.

•Approved a contract with Hay Dobbs Architecture at $3,400 plus incidentals for the design of a van garage.

•Approved Bueltel-Moseng Land Surveying to survey the property at 411 N. Jackson Street, where the school van garage will be built.

•Approved the low bid of $13,250 from Bisbee Plumbing and Heating of Marshall to repair the family rest room.

•Approved a gift of $1,614.68 from Hope Lutheran Mission Endowment Fund.

•Noted a new state law will not allow the school district to hold polling for its own elections at the school. There will now be combined polling places and in Minneota it will be at City Hall. As a result, future school elections will have to be held at city hall.

The school board took action to correct previous resolutions because they thought the elections could still be held at the school.
