Police intern seriously injured in accident

Hsa Law Eh airlifted to Sioux Falls after cycle hit by truck in Marshall

Riding his motorcycle en route to Minneota last Thursday to fill out his final timecard as an intern with the police department here, Hsa Law Eh was struck by a pickup truck and was seriously injured.
Hsa and Hsa Khee, twin brothers who are refugees from Burma that the Mascot featured in an article last May, interned with Minneota Police Chief Bill Bolt from May until Aug. 4, the day of the accident. The brothers, who are second-year Law Enforcement students at Alexandria Technical College, are scheduled to return to school Aug. 22.
Hsa 21, was traveling west along State Highway 19 when the eastbound 2013 GMC pickup driven by a 47-year-old Ivanhoe man struck Sah's 2003 Honda motorcycle while making a left turn the intersection of Channel Parkway and West College Drive in Marshall.
Hsa reportedly flew over the pickup truck after being struck. He was wearing a helmet and feels that saved his life.
"My helmet hit something," said Hsa from his hospital room late Monday evening. "I think I would have been hurt bad if I wasn't wearing my helmet."
Hsa was initially brought by ambulance to Avera Marshall Hospital before being airlifted to the Avera Sioux Falls Hospital.
He suffered a compound fracture to his left forearm that broke both bones and his left femur was broken in three places. Hsa surgically had a plate and several pins and screws inserted in his arm, and screws inserted into his femur. He expected to be hospitalized for two to three weeks before undergoing physical therapy at Avera Marshall, he said.
The driver of the truck was uninjured.
Hsa recalls the accident in that he sensed he was about to be hit.
"I tried to hit the brakes, but the bumper and his left headlight hit my motorcycle," Hsa said. "I remember I ended up on the road and there were a lot of people around."
Hsa admitted he is in good spirits despite the accident.
"My last day of work and this happens," Hsa said, managing to laugh about it. "I feel lucky that it wasn't worse, though. I'm getting good care here with great doctors and I'm getting better every day."Hsa's twin brother, Hsa Khee, was also in his final day interning with Chief Bolt at the time the accident occurred.
"We heard it on the radio, but we didn't realize it was Hsa," said Hsa Khee. "I thought it could be because I knew he was going to come over sometime that day and that he had a motorcycle, but we didn't know for sure."
Not long after, Chief Bolt received word that it was Hsa Law Eh and relayed that information to his brother.
"I drove over to the hospital in Marshall but I only saw him for a minute because they took him to Sioux Falls," said Hsa Khee. "I've visited with him in Sioux Falls a few times with my mother. He's doing good and talking a lot."
Chief Bolt is setting up a GoFundMe page for Hsa in order to defray medical costs.
"Any help is greatly appreciated," said Chief Bolt.
Bolt has also contacted the Alexandria Technical College to see is accommodations could be made in case Hsa is unable to start school on time.
"I'm trying to just let him recover and not lose a year of schooling," said Bolt. "Both boys did an excellent job here and have the potential to be good officers."
The twin brothers are very close and Hsa Khee said he would likely not go back to school until his brother is able.
"We might wait a semester to start," said Hsa Khee. "I don't want to start without him."
