Drunk strangers in town go before judge
Two strangers in Minneota were hauled before Judge Hein by Marshal Bartosh and charged with being drunk and disorderly. One of the men was fined $35 and the other $25.

Marshall flour mill to have new owner
The Marshall Flour Mill has been sold. The Marshall mill is one of the largest milling plants in the state outside of the Minneapolis milling district and is situated in one of the best localities in the state.

New grocery store slated to open here
Mrs. Dora VanDale is reportedly set to open a new grocery store on Main Street in Minneota. The building was formerly occupied by B.A. Casserly. Mrs. VanDale is expected to open on Oct. 21.

New sheriff says no booze in Lyon County
B.A. Casserly of Minneota, who is running for sheriff, says if he is elected after the first of January there will be no booze to be had in Lyon County. All three candidates for sheriff are of the opinion that there are more people in the county who want the prohibition law enforced then there are against enforcement.

Bjornson urges Legion building's completion
Gunnar B. Bjornson, former publisher of the Mascot, urges Minneota to complete the erection of the American Legion building despite funds being depleted. "I am sure that the farseeing and energetic men and women who are backing this building project will not surrender without having exerted every effort to make a 'go' of the undertaking. They will not give up the ship, but will fight it out if it takes all winter," he said.

Foundation to be poured at Hope Church
Concrete for the foundation for the new Hope Lutheran Church that the congregation is erecting here will be poured during the first part of next week, Rev. J. David Larsen reported. Workmen, assisted by members of the congregation, finished pouring concrete for the footings during the past week.

Neighbors pick widow's 60 acres of corn crop
There were 21 neighbors that gathered at the farm home of Mrs. Herman Verschelde last Friday morning and picked her entire crop of 60 acres of corn, a total of 2,000 bushels. The men picked the corn with four double-row and two single-row pickers and numerous wagons, trailers and tractors. Mrs. Verschelde, whose husband was fatally injured in an automobile accident three weeks ago, lives on a farm 10 miles southwest of Minneota with her seven children ranging in age from 10 months to 13 years old.

Boys, 7, hurt when struck by automobile
Thomas Johnson, the seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Reynold Johnson, suffered a broken leg and cuts to his head Sundy afternoon when he ran in front of an automobile driven by Nick Polejewski. The boy, playing near his home on the south edge of town, failed to see the car coming when he ran out onto the road.

Judging team rates high in 4-H contest
The Lyon County general livestock judging team represented Minnesota in the 1972 American Royal Judging Contest on Oct. 13 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Fifteen teams throughout the nation competed in the contest with Illinois winning top honors.
Minnesota finish fifth. Lyon County's team did very well in certain divisions in the contest, placing third in Oral presentation, fourth in Sheep and sixth in Beef Judging.
Dennis DeVos of Minneota finished first individually among 60 entrants in Sheep judging.

Venne elected banking director for Lyon County
D.J. Venne of the First State Bank of Minneota was elected Lyon County Director District 7 of the Minnesota Bankers Association at the annual meeting at the Montevideo Country Club on Sept 26.
Venne and new officers and directors for the district were elected for a one-year term.

Deros return from trip won in Chevrolet contest
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dero returned home last Saturday morning from a trip to Greece, Turkey and neighboring islands, which had been provided them by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors. The all-expense paid trip had been won by Mr. Dero as a result of an auto sales contest which was held last May, June and July. The Deros were gone about 10 days and reported upon their return that they had enjoyed the trip immensely.

Proposed referendum to aid public school
The voters of District 414 will be called to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to either pass or reject a referendum to aid the school district.
A top priority of the referendum is the speaker system in the school gymnasium.
The gym is used for athletic events, plays and musicals, as well as by the community throughout the year.
The speaker system needs to be replaced. New computers are also needed to replace the outdated ones.
Other areas on the referendum is adding to the current bus garage or building a new one, refinishing or replacing the gym floor, centralizing the high school library, and remodeling the old ag shop area.

Bagley to take over Ghent's M & M Cafe
Rachel Bagley has purchased the M & M Cafe in Ghent, it was reported. Marc and Marion Wigness owned and operated the cafe for many years before their daughter, Brenda, took over ownership.
The public is invited to cake and coffee on Friday, Oct. 31 from 2-6 p.m. to wish the Wigness family good luck in the future and to welcome the new owner.

Marathon winners at St. Edward's announced
The students from St. Edward's School in Minneota raised money for their classes during their annual Marathon walk recently.
The top fundraiser in each class received a trophy, compliments of Gene's Sporting Goods, and a special prize for their hard work.
The winners were: Charles Bot, first grade; Melissa Konold, second grade; Amanda Bot, third grade; Tony Buysse, fourth grade; Katie Guza, fifth grade; Ben Johnson, sixth grade; Paul Konold, seventh grade; and Rick Laleman, eighth grade.
The children raised $8,812.31 for their school.
