Sturck on sheriff campaign trail here
W.G. Strock, the current Lyon County deputy sheriff, was in Minneota over the latter part of last week. Storck is making a strong campaign for office of sheriff and says that the outlook is quite satisfactory.

Talks center on day trains returning here
For the past two weeks there has been considerable talk about the day trains being put back on this run between Watertown, South Dakota, and Tracy. Last Tuesday, B.B. Gislason and James H. Hall joined in a telegram that they sent to Superintendent Boyle of Winona, asking him when these trains will be put back. "Reasonably soon" was the response from Boyle. Gislason and Hall are now wondering whether they got a Hibernian "bull" or a bum "steer".

Rising costs may halt Legion's building
Costs of building materials, which have skyrocketed since construction was started on the community building being erected for the American Legion Post, may halt work on the structure unless additional funds are secured, a member of the Post's building committee informed the Mascot last week. The building committee's spokesman said that it would take approximately $43,000 to complete the building as originally planned.

MBA holds lively discussion at meeting
Christmas decorations, athletic lights for football, kittenball and baseball fields all came up for thorough discussion at a meeting of the Minneota Businessmen's Association held at the Legion Hall here Wednesday evening. Attendance at the meeting was large with about 50 members of the association being present. The most lively debate took place during a discussion of athletics and lights.

Boxing Club plans busty fistic season
Minneota's boxing club, which is already making plans to stage shows during the coming season, issued a call this week to boys interested in boxing to meet with managers Dr. William W. Merritt and Thomas Dickerson at St. Edward's School next Wednesday evening. All boys in the community interested in boxing, are urged to attend this meeting. There is no age limit. The coming season will be the third year that the Minneota Boxing Club has been in operation.

Catholic Ladies raise $1,500 for hospital
Ladies of the St. Edward's Catholic Church this week had raised about $1,500 of the $1,750 goal they had set for furnishing rooms in the hospital when it is built here. Ladies of the Icelandic parish here recently raised $740 for the same purpose.

Firemen called for two truck fires
The Minneota Fire Department, which is holding an Open House in observance of National Fire Prevention Week this Thursday evening, was called out twice, on consecutive days, for truck fires last week. The first was for a blaze in the engine of an M-G-T Co-op Oil Company bulk delivery truck at 1 p.m. last Wednesday. There was minor damage to the truck, which was parked at the Jerry Kloos resident at the time. The following day, at around 11 p.m., the firemen were called for a fire in a truck belonging to Bill Merritt, which was on County Road 3 about four and a half miles south of Minneota. The fire destroyed that truck. How this blaze started has not been determined. There were no injuries caused by either truck fire. The Minneota Fire Department was also called to the Ron Swedzinski farm around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a grass fire. Lightning ignited the grass.

School tax levy set at $412,00 for 1973
A tax levy of $412,000 for 1973 was voted by the local school board at its regular meeting last week. The breakdown by funds is as follows: maintenance, $265,000; transportation, $17,000; capital outlay, $35,000; debt redemption, $95,000.

Farmer injures back from fall off ladder
Norman Orsen, who farms about three miles southeast of Minneota, injured his back when fell from a ladder while working in a steel grain bin Sunday evening. Orsen fell a distance of about 12 feet and was taken to a hospital in Sioux Falls, where he underwent surgery on Tuesday.

Only one files for council seat
Only one person, E.E. Nordquist, a present Minneota councilman, filed for the village election during the filing period which ended on Tuesday afternoon. The election will be held on Nov. 7.

Sr. Center weekly dinner has free meal incentive
Members of the Minneota Senior Center have a plan to attract more people to utilize the Senior Dining Program. Each day, those who participate in the Senior Dining program have a chance for a "free" meal. Games of Bingo will be played daily, and the lucky winner, or winners, will receive a free meal ticket. Local businesses are helping to sponsor these games, by giving money that helps to cover the meals. Those 60 and over pay only $2.50 per meal. Those under 60 are welcome to attend, but are asked to pay $4,50 per meal. The meals are prepared at Minneota Manor Health Care Center.

Ghent man arrested for Canby bomb threat
Jacob Alan Head, 18, of Ghent has been charged with a felony count of making a terroristic threat in connection with a bomb threat at the Canby High School on May 16. Head appeared in court on Oct. 6 and that time a public defender was assigned to his case. Head pleaded innocent and another court hearing was scheduled for Oct. 13. Head called the Canby High School from a pay phone in Canby.

SPIN committee receives $5,000 grant
The Safer Playground is Needed (SPIN) committee was happy to learn that the playground project was awarded a $5,000 grant through the Bremer Foundation. The grant was received through the work of John Bowden of Southwest State University and Lori Dyce, chairperson of the SPIN committee.
