Dalager’s stepping aside

Following in the footsteps of former Minneota classmate Bill Ufkin, Chuck Dalager announced that his longtime establishment, Dalager’s Gas Station and convenience store, has been sold.

The announcement will be officially forthcoming, including the release of the names of the new owners, once all the paperwork has been completed.

“We will make a formal announcement in a few weeks,” said Dalager, who has owned and operated the business with his wife Linda for the last 35 years.

“The new owners are from Minneota, but I really don't want to elaborate at this time until the papers are all signed.” Dalager joked that Ufkin beat him to the punch in selling his longtime business first.

“Maybe I should have sold last year like Bill did,” he said. Dalager's, located on North Madison Street, has been a mainstay in Minneota.

Dalager’s parents first owned the store in 1960 and ran it for 22 years before Chuck and Linda took over. “I'm looking forward to (the sale),” said Dalager.

“Linda and I are at the age (Chuck will be 64 in three weeks) where it’s the right time to sell the place.” Minneota has been undergoing a “changing of the guards”, so to speak, in terms of longtime businesses changing hands recently, including the former Ufkin’s Furniture and Appliance Store and Bubba’s Bar.

The Dalagers have seven grandchildren, including the birth of their recent grandson living in Des Moines.

“We will have more time to spend with them now,” he said. “And we can make some short trips if we want.”

Chuck and Linda will assist the new owners with the transition. “We want to assist them ahead of time so when the sale is official, everything will be in place,” said Dalager.

“We plan on being out when the New Year rolls around.”

When Chuck Dalager’s parents first operated the business, they had two gas pumps and a bulk truck.

They then added a few groceries to transform the business into one of the first convenience-type stores in southwestern Minnesota.

When Dalager first announced that he was putting the business up for sale this summer, he spoke of how difficult it was becoming to compete and adapt to the times.

The Dalagers have spent a great deal of time at the business over the years. Dalager’s is open every day of the year with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“It’s time for someone younger to take over,” he said this summer.

“I’ve adapted quite a bit over the last 35 years.”

Soon, he and his wife will be adapting to a new way of life.
