Jeremy Eischens

Brother shot brother; charged

Sioux Falls police have confirmed that Minneota native Jeremy Alan Eischens, 27, has been charged with the shooting death of his 24-year-old brother Brandon Michael Eischens of Minneota.
Brandon was a 2011 graduate of Minneota High School.
The incident took place early Saturday morning in a Sioux Falls apartment. Sioux Falls Lt. Michael Colwill confirmed that Brandon died in the emergency room at Avera West Hospital in Sioux Falls after allegedly being shot twice in the upper torso by his brother.
Jeremy, who went to school in Minneota but dropped out before graduating, is being charged with first and second degree manslaughter, as well as various drug-related charges.
Because police believed the shooting was a reckless use of a deadly weapon, Jeremy was charged with manslaughter instead of murder.
Police also said that Jeremy had been drinking alcohol and taking drugs prior to the shooting. Although they aren't sure what types of drugs Jeremy was on during the shooting, police said that information should be available soon following a urine test.
Colwill addressed members of the media with details about the alleged shooting. He said that police suspected that Brandon went to Jeremy's apartment to give him the key to his vehicle so that Jeremy could travel to Colorado to purchase drugs.
Police said there were three other male witnesses in Jeremy's apartment at the time of the shooting, but no details were provided as to why the shooting occurred.
After the shooting, Jeremy and the three witnesses drove Brandon to the Avera West emergency room, where he died around 3:30 a.m.After being granted a search warrant, police searched Jeremy's apartment after the shooting took place and discovered cash totaling $29,000, as well as an undisclosed amount of marijuana, drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Initially, Jeremy told police that the shooting was an accident and that he was just showing his brother a new gun that he recently purchased and it went off.
A neighbor, Tyson Myers, told KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls that he heard the gun shot, followed by Jeremy crying and making statements such as, “I never meant for the gun to go off. It didn’t hit your heart. I love you.”
This was the second time Jeremy had been arrested in connection with his brother, following an aggravated assault charge in 2014.
Due to logistics, Lt. Colwill told members of the media that an autopsy will be performed on Brandon's body on Tuesday in Rapid City. The investigation remains ongoing, Colwill said.
