AREA EVENTS HEATING UP FOR SUMMER

There will be plenty of things to do for the entire family in the next several weeks with fairs and community events scheduled.
Some county fairs, including Yellow Medicine in Canby, have already been held, while others are just getting underway. Many local communities are preparing for their annual festivities.
The Lincoln County Fair in Tyler is being held July 28-31 this year. The Chippewa County Fair in Montevideo is also underway this weekend, going from July 27-31.
The Lyon County Fair in Marshall will be held Aug. 10-14 with Merriam carnival rides, animal barns, lots of food choices, rodeo, Los Moralitos circus, demo derby, axe throwing, rolle bolle, pedal pull, and more. This year's entertainment is provided by the White Sidewalls, IV Play, the Red Dirt Band, Hicktown Mafia and the Larry Olsen Band.
Belgian-American Days in Ghent will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5-6, which includes its annual Rolle Bolle Tournament, as well as the popular Ghent Cruisers Car Show, street dance, food stands, petting zoo, inflatables, and the Life's a Beach .05k run.
The 51st annual Polska Kielbasa Days in Ivanhoe is slated for Aug. 12-14. The Distinguished Young Woman event will be held that weekend. There will be also be tournaments held for golf, volleyball, softball, bean bag and basketball. The popular chili cook-off returns, as well as a pork chop feed, baby races, minnow races, Bingo, water fights, petting zoo, fireworks, a parade and much more.
The annual Porter Harvest Festival is scheduled to be held Aug. 20-21 this year and features the popular Tractor Show hosted by Kenny and Linda Buysse. There will also again be a kickball tournament, food stands, grilling contest, Firemen's water fights, kidie tractor pull and much more.
The State Fair this year is being held from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5. As always, you can try out the new foods being introduced. The Grand Stage this year will feature such musical acts as Counting Crows, Diana Ross, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Beach Boys, Temptations, Alice in Chains, Breaking Benjamin, Pit Bull, Iggy Azalea, Zac Brown Band and Florida Georgia Line. Comedian Jim Gaffigan will also perform this year.
Anchoring the summer's events is the annual Boxelder Bug Days festivities in Minneota over the second weekend of September. Taking to the stage at Big Square this year is Ali Gray, Abby Turner, Kayla Daniels and Avenger Joe.
Bug Days also features a myriad of games, tournaments, chili cookoff, food stands, queen coronation, parade and much more that will be detailed in a later issue.
At least for the next several weeks when your children say "I'm bored", you have plenty of choices to keep them entertained.
