One killed, five injured in separate area accidents

Tragedy hit the Cottonwood community with two separate accidents over the weekend. On Saturday, April 10, at approximately 2:26 p.m. the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an ATV accident in Stanley Township.
The operator of the ATV was identified as Parker Viaene, 20, of rural Cottonwood. Viaene was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained from the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
On Sunday morning, April 11, 2:20 a.m., the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office was notified of multiple people injured at a bonfire in rural Granite Falls. A flammable liquid was poured onto the fire, which caused people near the fire to be burned.
A male, age 18, was airlifted from the scene. Two males, both age 20, were brought to the Granite Falls Airport and also airlifted. Two additional males, ages 18 and 20, were treated for injuries at the Granite Falls Hospital.
