Water: There is too much of a good thing

Many may have noticed that our landscape in the last year has been subject to quite a bit of precipitation, in one form or another.

During my time at the Yellow Medicine River Watershed District, I’ve noticed an increase in precipitation seems to proceed an increase in the desire to improve agricultural drainage.

Who would of thought? I have a feeling as the snow is melting this year, I will see a ‘flood’, no pun intended (well maybe a little intended) of tiling applications come into the office all at once.

I would like to encourage anyone in the Watershed District that knows they would like to do a project this spring, beat the rush and start your application now.

All permits issued in 2019 will be good until December 31, 2020, so there is no reason to wait.

Also, our office is not always staffed, so before you rush out and make a special trip to see me, please call the office or my cell and make sure there is someone here or set up an appointment.

This is also a great time of year to start thinking about future projects you would like to see implemented or incorporated into your operation.

Is there a gully that should be addressed?

Are you ready to try cover crops or reduced tillage?

Or maybe there is wetland you would love to see restored. We have more programs and cost-share opportunities in the Yellow Medicine River Watershed District than ever before.

Contact the District office or local SWCD more information about our programs.

Last but not least, remember the Watershed District requires a permit for all drainage activities that take place inside the boundary.

You can find the District Rules, permit requirements, and contact info on our website at www.ymrwd.org or call the office at 507-872-6720.
