St. Edward School to celebrate Montessori Education Week

When the decision was made to pursue opening a preschool at St. Edward School, the Education Committee had several requirements. They wanted something different. Something that would complement the high academic achievement standards that we hold here. Something that would allow flexibility for families. Something that necessarily went hand in hand with our Catholic values.
Through much research we found ourselves leaning toward the Montessori Method of education. We began training all staff PreK – 8 in the Montessori Method and opened our doors to our first preschool students in October of 2019 using what we knew. During the summer of 2020, our preschool teacher attended rigorous courses to become certified in the method. In the fall of 2020, we became an authentic Montessori Children’s House.
But what is Montessori Education? The Montessori Method of Education is a child-centered, individualized pedagogy that was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. It has been used in schools all over the world for more than 100 years. Its usage is continuing to grow as parents and schools look for better ways to reach all children. The Montessori Method is a comprehensive “aid to life” in that it equips children with solid academics, but also strengthens social flexibility, emotional health, and self-confidence.
Within a Montessori classroom, there are only three rules: Respect yourself. Respect others. Respect the materials. These are so basic and yet all-encompassing. The teacher within the classroom is called a guide, as his/her role is to guide the children in their learning. Lessons are generally taught individually when a child is ready for them. Dr. Maria Montessori said that we must “follow the child” in their educational journey. The classroom guide observes each child to determine when they are ready for their next materials.
Feb. 20-26 is Montessori Education Week. During that week, we would like to invite individuals to visit our school to see this method in action. On Sunday, Feb. 27 from 5-7 p.m., we will be hosting an open discussion evening where individuals can tour our Montessori classroom and learn more about how beautiful this method is. To partake in either a visit to our school or to attend the open discussion, please call the school for more information.
