Outside Looking In
The last two Boxelder Bug Days queens, Brooke Moorse (2020-21) and Kaitlyn Ludwikowski (2021-22) are each featured on the front page of this issue. But the girls are featured for another reason than having a crown on their head. They both were heralded for another reason recently.
Moorse, who is now a freshman at South Dakota State University, recently garnered three top awards at the Minnesota State Fair after qualifying through the Yellow Medicine County Fair.
Ludwikowski recently became the first female from southwestern Minnesota to achieve Eagle Scout status.
Ironically, both girls followed the footsteps of an older brother; Brooke crediting her brother Garrett for her goat's award at the State Fair, and Kaitlyn becoming an Eagle Scout three years after her brother, Nathaniel became an Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor at St. Edward's School.
Moorse, the daughter of Greg and Becky Moorse, became Boxelder Bug Days queen in an outdoor ceremony and was the only event the town's celebration held in 2020 due to the pandemic.
She has shown dairy cows at the state fair 4-H shows for several years, but this was the first time she had showed a goat. Moorse brought Flirtini, a three-year-old LaMancha, to the State Fair and was Advanced Showmanship champion, Champion Senior LaMancha, and Best in Show, Senior Doe.
Ludwikowski, the daughter of Michael and Colleen Ludwikowski, went through a lengthy process of having to earn a required 21 merit badges (she actually earned 26 so far and is working on a 27th) and then completing a community project.
Who knows what this year's Boxelder Bug Days queen will achieve after being crowned during the coronation festivities scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10.
The candidates this year are Brooke DeSmet, Dakoda Hennen, Faith Myhre and Shelby Neyens. Good luck to all of you.
