Johnson returns after
2 months in Montana
Miss Sigfinna Johnson returned Saturday to Minneota from a two-month vacation spent in Montana. She was the guest of former Minneotans Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Josephson in Deer Lodge. Miss Johnson enjoyed her stay greatly and is very enthusiastic about the wonderful scenery of the west.

469 students enrolled
in two schools here
A total of 469 pupils started the school term at Minneota's two schools this week; 303 at Minneota Public Schools and 166 at St. Edward's School. When school opened a year ago, there were 440 pupils enrolled in the two schools. Enrollment is expected to increase somewhat at both institutions as there are nearly always students entering school after the first week.

Hemnes Church filled
during 3-day celebration
Hemnes Lutheran Free Church congregation commemorated the 75th anniversary of its foundation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The celebration was a very successful affair and the church was filled to capacity at every meeting. About 400 were present at the church during meetings on Sunday. Members of the congregation and their guests attended a fellowship dinner and supper served at the Otto Myrvik home by the Ladies' Aid of the church.

Variety store to
open in Minneota
Harold Olson, who has been managing a Scott store in Montevideo, will open a variety store in the Leland building here within the next week or 10 days. A partition diving the Leland building in two, the long way, has just been completed and Mr. Olson's store will occupy the south half while Mr. Leland will have the north half for his drug store. Mr. Olson has been in the variety store business for the past 15 years.

Lyon County Auditor
dies of heart attack
Miss Sarah Murray, the Lyon County Auditor, died at the Marshall hospital Tuesday evening after collapsing at a meeting of the county commissioners that afternoon. It was reported that Miss Murray, who had been appointed county auditor in 1944, suffered a heart attack.

Dero resigns from
post office position
Joseph Dero, who has held the position of postmaster here since June of 1968, resigned from his position last Friday and has accepted a clerical position with the post office in Fargo, North Dakota. The post office here is now in charge of Clifford A. Dahl of Marshall until a new postmaster is named. He is presently clerk in charge in the Marshall office and took over here when Dero resigned.

Local woman injured
in straw-baler accident
Mrs. Odin VanDeelen, who with her husband, farm north of Minneota, escaped very serious injuries in a straw-baler accident on their farm last Monday. However, Mrs. VanDeelen did sustain two broken bones in her left hand, which necessitates wearing a cast. She was driving the tractor pulling the baler when it became necessary to leave the tractor to make an adjustment to the swath. She was hit in the arm by the plunger, which caused her injuries, which could have been much more serious had she been only inches closer to the plunger.

car accident here
Cars being driven by William Ronald of Marshall and Mrs. Kenneth Nomeland of Minneota collided at the intersection of Madison and Third Streets on Monday evening. The cars were damaged to the extent of $500 each, but the drivers, alone in their vehicles, were not injured. Mrs. Nomeland was taken to the hospital on Tuesday for observation.

Burglars steal $50
from Taunton home
The Bob Drown home in Taunton was burglarized on Tuesday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. No one was home at the time. As far as the Drowns could tell, around $50 was taken from their home.

membership drive
The Minneota-Taunton VFW announces that it is holding its 13th annual membership drive and picnic on Sunday at Riverside Park in Minneota. Those attending are asked to bring their own steak to grill.

Local school board
short one person
At the August School Board meeting, five members reported for duty. A sixth member is still needed very soon. The board asked Tom Nomeland to remain on the board for the two-year term, but he declined because of his hectic work schedule. Christy Brewers was also asked to fill the position, but she declined because of family obligations. It takes time to serve on the school board. If anyone is interested in filling the vacant spot, please step forward now.

Five new school
teachers introduced
There are four new high school teachers and one elementary teacher in Minneota for the 1997-98 school year. At the high school, Amanda Ross will be the Media Generalist, Kelly Haaland will be the Industrial Arts instructor, Carrie Blomker will be the Spanish teacher, and Michelle Schneider the Junior High English teacher. Amy Myster is the new fourth grade teacher at the public school.

Butch Obe wins local
club championship
Butch Obe shot a 110 over 27 holes to capture the Countryside Golf Club men's tournament by one stroke title this past Sunday. Brian Obe and Doug Spanton tied for second place, each shoot a 111. Jim Rolbiecki was fourth with a 112 and Tim Stegner fifth with a 113. There were 72 golfers that competed this year in seven flights, including 16 in the championship flight.

2018 - Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam before a 35-year political career that took him to the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, dies at the age of 81 after battling brain cancer for more than a year.
