Hot, dry weather
threatens corn crop
Corn, which is now tasseling in this area, has not had any moisture to speak of since early July. Farmers are now concerned that they won't have any crop unless we get rain soon. High temperatures during the past week when the mercury went as high as 100 degrees haven't done the crop any good. On sandy and light soil, the corn has already been seriously affected by the prolonged drought, while on heavier soil the corn is withstanding the heat much better than expected.

Firemen called to

Minneota's Fire Department was called to the Hans Christianson farm neat Porter Monday afternoon when the fire destroyed a granary threatened nearby buildings. The farm, rented by Arnold Packer, is two miles southeast of Porter. The granary and 200 bushels of barley were completely destroyed.

Bill Holm to perform
at Boxelder Bug Days
Bill Holm, the inspiration for the naming of Boxelder Bug Days, has agreed to sing and play for the variety show during the town's annual event. Holm is also expected to do a little reading from one of his books. His wry sense of humor is always a good beginning to the variety show. The Minneota Community Choir will also perform, as will the Community Jazz Band and the Dixie Land Band.

School playground
equipment delayed
Some of the workers showed up Monday morning, but the new playground equipment for the public school did not. The report is that the playground equipment is on back order. It seems that so many new sets have been ordered that the manufacturer has not been able to keep up at the plant. The committee is hoping that the playground equipment arrives and can be installed before the students return to school.
