Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:
I’m writing this letter as an alarm clock to our lives and how disappointing our culture has become. It seems as though we are living in a time when there are no consequences.
Our lack of respect to others, property and ourselves is just for self-gain. Why is it most important (at any cost) to be better than someone else, have more wealth, farm more land, get a better score? Why are we judging ourselves by the material things we have and not by the character we show? For instance, someone using illegal drugs to better themselves above others. Are they not considerate of others by taking for granted the time their competitors have invested in themselves? Lack of respect, no consequences for doing wrong, cheating - we ask ourselves why? How can this happen?
My answer is this: Parenting. Parents are not disciplining their children anymore because they’re afraid their children will not love them back or stop loving them.
Wrong. Your children will look back and love you more for teaching them right from wrong and showing them there are consequences for doing wrong and for not respecting others. Build character in your children and you will be paid back hundredfold with respect from them and everyone around them. I pray this letter finds your homes and let's start making small differences now so our children have the character to make big differences.
