Understanding value

If I asked you, what is the most valuable thing you own, how would you answer? Would you tell me your home, vehicle, or retirement?
I recently had an opportunity to explain to several people that the most valuable thing they own is their good reputation and integrity. Your good reputation is very precious as it is a giant neon sign telling others what they can expect from you and who you are. It also reflects on your family through your family name.
For instance, as I was growing up, I was known as “Cliff’s son” or “Bolt’s boy” and everything I did reflected on my father and how he raised me. This continues with my children. They are known as “Bill’s kids” or “the cop's kid”.
Our actions don’t just impact us but also impact the reputation of those who raised us. You get to decide what type of reputation you have based upon how you act and treat others. If you lie, you will be known as a liar. If you steal, you will be known as a thief. Do you want a bad reputation? You can blame others for your situation but at the end of the day, your reputation will be impacted by YOUR actions. No one makes you take drugs. No one makes you cheat on a test. No one makes you lie or abuse others.
Good reputations are not given, they are earned. Bad reputations are the same. Reputations can take years to build and seconds to destroy. If you have a good reputation, I encourage you to guard it and build upon it. IF you have a bad reputation, you can change it by making better decisions and being a better person.
Life is not easy. Work hard. Be honest. Value your family name. Be an example to others. Own your mistakes. Be quick to apologize and slow to anger. Forgive. What does your reputation say about you?
