Minneota’s surprising Junior American Legion season continued last week with a 9-7 win over Dawson — pushing the team’s South Central District record to 8-0 on the year.
With the varsity speech meet in Montevideo canceled because of poor weather, the Minneota Junior High took over with their own meet on Monday.
The Minneota Jr. Legion lost at Hutchinson last Friday, 10-0. “We played really good until the fifth and sixth innings when the wheels came off,” said Coach J.D. Pesch.
The Minneota Jr. Legion Vulcans spotted Madison a 5-1 lead in the third inning, rallied to tie it 5-5, rallied again to tie it 6-6 in the seventh, and won it in the eighth, 7-6.
“This is a team that took third in the state last year,” said Coach J.D. Pesch.
Minneota's Junior American Legion Vultures, like the menancing birds that fly over K. P. Kompelien Park, nearly devoured its prey on Tuesday — but fell just a couple runs short.
The goal wasn’t so much to win the game easily, as it was to escape the semifinals with an intact pitching staff for Tuesday’s possibly two-game showdown with Madison.
The Minneota Vultures Junior Legion lost their opener to Canby, 5-2, but bounced back with a six-inning, 12-2 win over Dawson and are still alive in the double elimination tournament.
The Minneota Vultures Jr. Legion baseball team had a rough week. In two games, they made 21 errors, losing Friday at Sacred Heart to RCW/MACCRAY, 11-10 and Tuesday to the Marshall VFW, 11-5.
