The last of three public hearings was held prior to last Tuesday night’s School Board meeting at the high school. Seven people were on hand to voice their opinions.
The main concern on these folks’ minds was the school year starting while the State Fair was in progress.
It was noted that the kids in 4-H will miss a week of school while they are at the State Fair, and this is a negative way to start the year.
Also mentioned was the Fall athletic schedule beginning, and that athletes should not be penalized for missing practice while they are showing at the State Fair.
Said Board member Dawn VanKeulen, “The only negative thing I’ve heard is the 4-H complaint.”
She talked about the leadership that comes through 4-H but  felt that “kids really need to get back to school to prepare for testing that is given very early in the school year.”
Superintendent Dan Deitte added, “There are pros and cons of every new issue. I feel we have a proposal here that will make a difference when all the Districts can work together. I don’t think we have even touched the surface yet.”
The question of St. Edward’s School involvement also came up. Since they use the same busing, they would adopt some of the same schedule. But, it was noted, they often take days off that the public school does not, so their schedule can be more flexible.
Board Chair Larry Buysse said, “I support the flexible learning year because I see it being beneficial for our students.”
Christy Brewers added, “One of our main reasons (to start early) is to keep our test scores up and this is one way that we can do that.” The Board voted to approve this new initiative.
