Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy Austin Thompson was recently awarded a life-saving pin for his part in saving a non-responsive woman's life who had overdosed.

THOMPSON CITED FOR LIFE-SAVING MEASURES

Austin Thompson was cited recently for taking the proper steps toward saving a young Marshall woman's life.
"Just being at the right place at the right time," the Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy said.
Thompson, a personable Minneota native, has been a deputy for the Lyon County Sheriff's Department for two and a half years now. He previously worked part-time as a police officer in Minneota under Police Chief Bill Bolt.
Deputy Thompson and another deputy, Dustin Demuth, received life-saving awards for their actions at a medical emergency call last week.
"I was in the office in Marshall and I overheard the 911 call come in that there was a non-responsive female," said Thompson. "So, I immediately responded."
Deputy Thompson arrived at the residence and the young woman had apparently overdosed and was still non-responsive.
After assessing the situation, Deputy Thompson administered Narcan to the young woman.
"There were local Marshall police officers there, but they didn't have Narcan with them," he said. "I was carrying Narcan with me. You administer it into the nose of the victim like a nasal spray."
Narcan is generally used in people of all ages if opioid overdose occurs or has possibly happened. It is classified as an opioid antagonist.
Deputy Demuth, who is also an EMT, arrived a short time later and continued to provide care for the victim until North Memorial Ambulance personnel arrived. The woman was taken by EMT's to Avera Hospital in Marshall.
"It isn't the first time I've had to administer Narcan," Deputy Thompson said. "We want to do anything we can to help someone out. It's all part of the job. Every day is something different."
Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen, also a Minneota native, praised his two deputies.
"I believe that the actions of these two deputies played a part in preventing the death or serious harm to the victim," said Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen.
