Guttormsson family being honored

The Icelandic American Association of Minnesota will be honoring Rev. Guttormor Guttormsson, as well as his son and grandson, posthumously at its annual Thorrablot on March 16 at the Bloomington Events Center.

Thorrablot is an Icelandic Midwinter Feast that features music, comedy, food and activities for children.

Rev. Guttormsson, who was born in Canada, was the minister at St. Paul's Icelandic Lutheran Church in Minneota from 1918 until his death in 1956.

His son, Stefan Guttormsson, also became a minister and later a bishop.

“Stefan gave his first sermon at St. Paul's Icelandic Lutheran Church,” said Claire Eckley, the current President of the Icelandic American Association of Minnesota.

Stefan Guttormsson Jr., who passed away last year, became a doctor in Duluth and had visited Minneota several times.

He is the first cousin to former Mascot Publisher Jon Guttormsson.

“Stefan Jr. was part of the Icelandic and Scandinavian community in Duluth,” said Eckley.

“He was also on the board for the Icelandic National League of North America.”

Bruce Colton, a magician from the Twin Cities, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the 2019 Thorrablot.

Bjorn Nordfjord, an Icelander and professor at St. Olaf College in Northfield, will be the guest speaker.

The large menu includes traditional Icelandic food: cod, smoked lamb, rolled spiced beef, mashed rutabaga, creamed new potatoes, peas, shrimp and cucumber salad, smoked salmon, blood sausage, head cheese, herring, bread, and cake with whipped cream and strawberries.

Social hour in 5 p.m., with the dinner at 6 p.m. There will also be a raffle for a $500 gift certificate for Icelandair, which can be used for a flight to any Icelandair destination; as well as a silent auction.

The President of the Icelandic American Association of Minnesota's mission is to promote Icelandic culture, past and present; to support events that celebrate Icelandic culture; and to provide an organization to anyone interested in Iceland.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased by calling 952-881-3326.
