The fight against cancer continues

Local Relay for Life set for June 21

Nearly everyone knows someone who has survived cancer, is currently battling cancer, or has succumbed to cancer. And the fight to knock out cancer continues through various fundraising events across the country, including the popular Relay for Life. The 26th annual Lyon County Relay for Life is again set for Friday, June 21 at the Red Baron Arena in Marshall.

The event runs from 4:30-10:30 p.m., with the Community Meal from 5-6:30 p.m. and the Opening Ceremony slated for 7 p.m. Relay For Life is the number one fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

"The American Cancer Society has, or will, impact every single person, whether it be through cancer treatment, prevention, education or policy," said Betsy Jo Kack, a two-time cancer survivor.

"Our Relay For Life of Lyon County is such a wonderful opportunity to honor cancer survivors, support those fighting cancer now and remembering our loved ones and friends that we have lost to this disease." The Lyon County Relay for Life was held at the Lyon County Fairgrounds for many years until inclement weather forced committee members to move the event indoors to KB's Bar & Grill in Ghent three years ago and then the Red Baron Arena.

Many popular activities have been downsized since moving indoors, such as themed campsites, the luminary walking path, and team activities. But the spirit of those raising money for the American Cancer Society is stronger than ever.

Various teams fundraise throughout the year. Teams can be comprised of as many people as they want. Some of the teams will offer concession items at the Relay for Life or have games or youth activities. There is no award for top fundraising team, but they are recognized during the Closing Ceremony.

"We have 24 team members this year," said Kack, who is on the Jimmy's J Crew team this year.

"Collectively, our team members have been Belgian Cookies, Relay Racers, Holy Walk-a-Mollies and Kack Attack on Cancer."

Weather permitting, luminaries to honor those who have survived cancer, are currently undergoing treatment, or those who have passed away from cancer, will be placed indoors and outdoors this year. Speakers this year will include Honorary Survivor Kari Loft and Honorary Caregiver Brittany Yockey (for her son Dyllen).

Wiping cancer out will take scientists, doctors, nurses, corporations, policy makers, community leaders and volunteers. As many people as possible need to come together and work toward a common goal. The end of cancer is being created day by day. Although the eventual goal seems far off, the impossible often becomes possible.

The Relay for Life events need the support of many people to continually raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The more people support and donate to this important cause, the sooner we won't know someone affiliated with cancer.
