COMMUNITY SPIRIT KEEPS ON SHINING FOR THOSE IN NEED

DeVos fighting cancer; fundraiser set

When someone is struggling with an illness, community support is vital. And Minneota is second to none when supporting those in need.
Two years after seemingly beating endometrial cancer, Chris DeVos of Minneota was told recently it had returned. She began taking chemotherapy and daily radiation in Sioux Falls.
One of the fundraising events being held features a raffle with valuable prizes that have generously been donated by friends and family to support Chris, Larry, her son Coty and his wife Haylee, during this trying time.
Chris's sister, Allison recently lost her husband in an automobile accident, she donated a new gun that belonged to Ron. This donation has special meaning because Ron & Allison and Coty & his wife Haylee hunted together. The Browning A Bolt II 300 WSM 23-inch barrel rifle is valued at $1,200.
Chris's good friend, Nancy Longhenry and her husband Roger, have donated a time share at a vacation resort in Kissimmee, Florida that is valued at $2,800.
”Chris and I have developed a close friendship over the years,” said Nancy Longhenry. The two-bedroom villa is located at Westgate Vacation Villas Resort and features a king bed, two twin beds, queen sleeper/sofa, fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and washer/dryer. There is also fishing, boating, miniature golf, fitness center, lighted basketball court, tennis courts, volleyball courts, movie center and game room available nearby.
Linda Hennen, Chris’s Mom, has donated a quarter of beef for the raffle, valued at $375. There will also be a mystery prize worth $400, as well as several cash prizes.
To defray the costs, friends and family have also rallied to initiate a fundraising event this Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Sportsmen's Club on Highway 68 east of Minneota.
The fundraiser will feature a lunch served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. consisting of BBQ's and hot dogs with all the trimmings. There will also be a bake sale, silent auction, and sweatshirts and bracelets for sale.
