‘The Great Kapok Tree’ still teaches kids

They’ve been telling this story about “The Great Kapok Tree” in the Minneota Elementary School for years.

This wood chopper comes into the forest to cut down the tree, falls asleep and is told by all the animals and reptiles of the forest how much good the tree is doing for them and for the forest itself.

The wood chopper eventually leaves the forest without chop- ping it down. The lesson is there for all the kids to digest and appreciate.

It’s a story about how actions can affect the environment and important a single tree is to the balance of nature.

The kids put on the performance three times on Monday in Sherri Schultze’s Fourth Grade Class.

Reader-narrator Bekkum Gillund smiled as he watched his classmates perform the play, including “frog” Lillie Benson.
