Viking matmen off to solid 7-0 start

After an impressive showing in the elite Rogers Invitational to start the season, Minneota began the dual portion of the season and grabbed three wins in the Redwood Valley Quadrangular last Thursday and four more in the Wabasso Tournament on Saturday.
Among those the Vikings conquered on Saturday was Holdingford, the No. 6-ranked team in Class A which has five of the top-ranked individual wrestlers. Minneota prevailed 39-24.
The Vikings also topped ACGC 43-30, Quad City 52-23 and Adrian Area 40-30 on Saturday.
"The team wrestled very well once again," said co-coach Matt Buysse. "We had a few big wins on the day. The first one was against a section opponent, ACGC, and then the big win against Holdingford."
In the win over Holdingford, Kyler Lozinski's pin at 220 clinched the match for the Vikings. Zack Firer and Scholten also had pins in that match.
"We wrestled as a complete team for this one," said Buysse. "We had several kids step up after some things didn't go our way. This is a true testament to the kids' ability to battle in adverse situations."
Going 4-0 for the Vikings was Kaden Lasnetski at 106 pounds, Adam DeVlaeminck at 113-120, Destin Fier at 152-160, and Zack Fier at 160-170.
Brock Fier went 3-1 at 145 pounds and Eli Gruenes was 3-1 at 182-195. Randy Sorensen at 120 pounds, Ezequiel Monzon at 132 pounds, Alex DePestel at 172-180, and Hudson Scholten at 285 all went 2-1.
"The team responded very well (despite) the lack of consistent practice time," said Buysse. "To this point some of our wrestlers have only had a total of eight practices. They have done a tremendous job of getting workouts done on their own and preparing themselves for matches. We have had several young wrestlers step up on varsity. This has allowed us to be very competitive."
One of those is Lasnetski, a freshman who is off to an impressive 6-3 record. Sorensen, a seventh grader, has also been a pleasant surprise.
"Randy ('RJ') has done a great job of competing and we are excited to see what the future brings," Buysse said.
Mason Javers, also a seventh grader, notched a key win against ACGC.
"He had competed very well to this point and continued to make great strides for this team," Buysse noted.
Monzon, a senior, is back on the team after missing most of the last two years while battling cancer, continues to improve as he gets more time on the mat.
"He has done a tremendous job competing for us," said Buysse. "We look forward to his impact on this team moving forward."
