Going to the prom

Women are different than men. They “like,” or maybe “love” to get all dressed up, go out of their house and attend an event where the ladies are all dressed up.

Of-course, men are not like that at all.

The snarl and complain when they have to try on clothes. And wearing a tie is kinda like putting a noose around a man’s neck.

But last weekend, they both put on their best outfits and “Went to the Prom.” Yes, that’s right, the prom. Some of the dresses were glorious — just like when the high school kids dress up for the prom.

One of those ladies is Darlene Josephson. She’s a friend of Mascot since she started ordering pictures of her grandchildren playing sports at Minneota High School.

So when she had a certain dress she wanted to wear to the prom, she asked our “Milk Maid”, Brittany Moorse for help.

Brittany, who loves jewelry, outfitted Darlene with a beautiful necklace.

Darlene showed up at the supper at Bethel Church, and quickly proclaimed how much she loved the necklace. “But it is heavy,” she said.

This story is about folks like Darlene, who take a moment out of their busy lives to have a little fun ... so they get the merry-go-round for a few brief moments.

Most surprising was to see several folks I didn’t know. Someone local asked, “Where do these people come from?”

My idea is they are busy, working people, much younger than myself and just don’t have time to present themselves in the community.

But the Adult Prom gave them an opportunity to dress up, get out and socialize.

And when the event is being held to raise funds to renovate the local swimming pool in town — well, then, all the better.

Oh, by the way, Darlene’s partner was not feeling well and couldn’t attend. So she stuck her head into the Prom Dance at the Minneota American Legion Hall, then left. “I wish I would have stayed,” she said.

This column is also a tribute to Darlene Josephson, who is always happy, go-lucky and pleasant when she comes in to visit us. It’s a breath of fresh air to have come into the Mascot. When I first met Darlene, I wondered about this person who loved to give everyone a hug.

Now, we have come to depend on it.

You looked fabulous Darlene — and so did all the women who showed up for the Prom. We appreciate so much those who spent so much time and effort to make sure everyone had a good time — and in the process they also raised money for a very good event.

Hey, this was the first one and it was a huge success. Let’s do it again sometime. Thanks to all who made it a success!!!!!!

LAUGH A LITTLE: Ask a stupid question. The teacher asked the student to SPELL MOUSE. The student spelled, “MOUS.” And the teacher said, “What’s on the end of it?” Student: A tail!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: As my Ole Pappy used to say, “Remember, life is a little sunshine and rain, teardrops and laughter, pleasure ... and pain! But the fact is, there was never a cloud the sun couldn’t shine through.”

I remember losing my driving privileges for six months and I thought the world ended. But instead, Ole Pappy taught me to improvise and use all my resources. And guess what, “The sun did come up the next day.” Thanks Ole Pappy!
