Ole Pappy

Thank You Twins!

“Are you in mourning today,” I was asked by a friend at coffee Tuesday morning. He was, of-course, referring to the fact my Minnesota Twins lost three straight games to the New York Yankees and now this beautiful, fun-filled, glorious season was all over.

I looked him in the race and honestly said, “No, not all. In fact, it was a fantastic season — far better than any of us could have imagined when it all started back in April.

Then someone tried to mention that horrible 16-game playoff losing streak the Twins have to the Yankees. I brushed it off quickly by saying, “They’re a better team. It doesn’t matter who the Twins lost to, or how, it’s over.” Here’s the fact.

“It was so much fun. This year’s team gave us an incredible season, game-after-game, pitch-after pitch.” It was oh, so much funny following them.

As I always say, “There’s only one team happy in the end anyway,” — and that would be the World Series Champions. Whenever someone tried to throw in a negative, I’d simply say, “Think about all those other teams sitting at home watching the Twins play.

They got to the playoffs, that’s more than most others can say.”

I’d have to say the biggest negative to the entire season concerned that contract dispute that kept the Twins off the air most of the summer. While I had cable in Minneota and saw all the games, many others had to either miss the broadcasts or find an alternative to watch them.

It’s hard to believe a contract dispute had to come up this year — of all years, when the Twins were really good. What a shame! I got a little taste of that last weekend when I went to Wisconsin to my other home.

I was getting ready to sit down and watch the Twins in about a half hour when I checked to see what network they were on.

I was suddenly struck with horror when I discovered they were on MLB (Major League Baseball) network and we did NOT have that station on our TV. Minneota cable carries it, but Grantsburg, WI did not.

So I hopped in my car and drove to the nearest restaurant and asked if they were going to show the Twins playoff game.

They checked and found they had MLB and say, “Yes, we’ll have it on.” So I went home and got my wife and we drove to the restaurant for supper. The hard part was making the supper last for two hours so we could watch the game.

But we did it. First we ordered a bowl of supper, then ordered the main meal. But that time we were full, so we nursed a beverage for awhile.

Then, I ordered a small dish of ice cream for my wife as a dessert. All the while the crowd was thinning out so the waitress, in tune with our needs to watch the game, told us we could stay as long as we desired. We stayed until the game got out of hand for the Twins. Anyway, Thank You Twins. It was a great season.

LAUGH A LITTLE: Don’t count on it. A police officer in a small town stopped a driver speeding down the main street. The driver said he could explain why he was speeding, but the police officer said he was going to put him in jail until the Chief got back.

Then he explained, “Lucky for you, the chief will be in a good mood because he is at his daughter’s wedding. Then the driver said, “Don’t count on it. I’m the groom.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: As my Ole Pappy used to say, “Worry is a waste of time. It doesn’t change anything. All it does is steal your joy — and it keeps you busy doing nothing.” Ole Pappy had some sage advice for us all! Thanks Ole Pappy!
