Milk Maid

Showcasing a ‘Cow of the Day’
One of the best ways though may be to raise a glass (of milk), an ice cream cone, or even a wedge of cheese and toast the people and cows that produce those delicious and nutritious products everyday.

June is upon us and holy cow does it feel like summer!

June is one of my favorite months because it is National Dairy Month!

What is June Dairy Month?

It’s a month to recognize and celebrate dairy products and the farmers who produce them. Throughout the month, people, companies and communities will continue to recognize dairy’s positive impact on nutrition and the planet. It was first celebrated in 1937.

There are so many different ways to celebrate! Something kind of different that my family and I have done this year to celebrate is everyday for the month of June we are showcasing a “Cow of the Day,” on our farm’s Facebook page. Without our leading ladies, there wouldn’t be any wholesome dairy products to enjoy.

Each “Cow of the Day” shares some information about herself. It’s been fun to showcase one our cows everyday.

There have been some disagreements about who the “Cow of the Day” should be since they are all so deserving. I think it has gone to some of the cows’ heads already. They enjoy being the center of attention. If you’re on Facebook, check it out, it’s been fun sharing about our cows. There are many different ways to celebrate.

Some counties host events called, “Breakfast on the Farm.” The Lyon County Farm Bureau is hosting one at the Paul Lanoue farm located near Marshall on Thursday, June 22 from 6-9 a.m. The public is welcome to attend. There will be farmers from all different backgrounds available to visit with and the Lanoues will have their farm open for tours.

Something we are doing more locally to celebrate is Storytime at the Minneota Public Library. I am honored to be the first guest speaker at Storytime this summer.

The first event will be held on Wednesday, June 14 from 6:30-7:15 p.m. at the library. I will be reading a few stories, bringing some delicious dairy snacks, handing out some really cool treat bags and doing a fun craft with those who attend.

Mary Buysse, the Head Librarian at the Minneota Library, works really hard to put on these programs and I couldn’t be more excited to present. My sister Brooke will also be along to help, whether she knows it yet or not.

Another way to celebrate is by participating in the designated special days. June 1 was “World Milk Day.” It was initiated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), “World Milk Day” marks the importance of milk as part of a healthy and balanced diet and the dairy industry’s global contributions to economic development and agriculture, including the one billion people who derive their livelihood from it, as well its commitment to sustainability and protecting the environment.

On Sunday, it was National Cheese Day. It was the perfect day to eat cheese and deliver cheesey puns. My friend Andy sent me this poem of sorts set to the tune of the song Sweet dreams (are made of this), “Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to dis a brie? I cheddar the world and the feta cheese, everybody’s looking for Stilton.” I thought it was really cheesey, and funny.

According to the USDA, the United States produces nearly a billion pounds of cheese every MONTH and the average American consumes nearly 34 pounds of cheese a year!

Most of that cheese consumption is on pizzas. I am probably way over the average, as I love cheese. It is just so darn Gouda. Mozzarella is the most popular kind with cheddar in second. This June, there are a many different ways you celebrate June Dairy Month.

One of the best ways though may be to raise a glass (of milk), an ice cream cone, or even a wedge of cheese and toast the people and cows that produce those delicious and nutritious products everyday.
